Dr Charles Essery

The Brooklyn Community Association was privileged to have Dr Charles Essery as a member serving on the Committee from December 2021 to his recent and untimely passing on 4 June 2022.

Charles emigrated from Northern Ireland in the early 1990’s with his wife Claire, living in Brooklyn for the past 20 or so years and had a strong interest in community activities, his work and the broader political environment.

He was most recently the Principal of Sustainable Water Solutions, a passionate advocate for environmental sustainability, a well -known academic, and formerly in a senior leadership role in state government, Sydney Water, as Chief Water and Sewerage Engineer for NSW before launching his consultancy in sustainable water cycle management.

He brought his knowledge and capacity to the work of the Committee in challenging the status quo and offering robust argument and knowledge to issues like the Peat Island redevelopment and most recently work shopping parking challenges and opportunities in Brooklyn.  Prior to the Committee, Charles also served on the Brooklyn Medical Centre Management Committee for several years.

Volunteering is at the heart of what many in our community do, offering their intellect and their labour to kicking the ball along knowing that with all our efforts it eventually reaches its goal.

Charles will be well remembered as a vital and passionate player and the BCA and community are richer for his contribution.
